THE LEGEND OF GASPARILLA

It all started in 1904, when the mystical legend of Jose Gaspar came to life. Gaspar and his scar-faced, eye patch-wearing band of pirates soon became known to Tampa residents as Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla. Decked out in the garb of high seas pirates, they storm Bayshore Boulevard and downtown Tampa, demanding that the Mayor surrender the city.

Each year in January the siege is repeated. The pirate ship Jose Gaspar sails into the harbor near downtown Tampa with a flotilla of hundreds of boats. The pirates blast away with pistols and cannons as they prepare to start the invasion. The captain and his Krewe capture the city (with little resistance) and share their wealth of trinkets, doubloons, and necklaces with the enthusiastic crowd along the parade route.

The Krewe of Venus follows close behind with its Royal Court float, Loyal Subjects float, Debutante float, and Kings Guard float. Two weeks after the Gasparilla invasion, the party continues with the Knights of Sant‘ Yago Ybor City Knight Parade.

About the Krewe

The Krewe of Venus, established in 1965, is the second-oldest Gasparilla Krewe in Tampa and the first co-ed Krewe.

History of the Krewe

The heritage of the Krewe of Venus extends back over three decades in Tampa. Our founder, Mrs. Frank (Lucille) Cochran, and members of the Tampa Women’s Club, established the Krewe in 1965.

With support and representation from the New Orleans Krewe of Venus, first-year activities were kicked off with a Mardi Gras style Coronation Ball at the old Curtis Hixon Convention Center in the fall of 1965. Since that year, Kings and Queens have been crowned and our gala events have become a glittering part of the Tampa Bay social scene.

The Krewe also participates in the Gasparilla Children’s Parade, Gasparilla Pirate invasion flotilla, Gasparilla Pirate Fest Parade, Ybor City Knight Parade, and St. Patrick’s Night Parade.

The King’s Guard

The King’s Guard is the mens’ group established to assist and protect the Royal Court, organize and manage all parade and float activities, and support all Krewe events. The King’s Guard hosts an annual Christmas Brunch, supporting local area childrens’ homes or hospitals with toys and gifts.

The King’s Guard has a standard uniform worn for all parades and special Krewe functions. While under the Krewe of Venus mantle and reporting directly to it, they have their own Captain and committees to organize their functions.

For more information on the King’s Guard, Krewe history, and current and past Kings and Queens, visit our Kings and Queens and Krewe Information pages.

The Arms of Venus

The Arms of Venus is the women’s group established to create and facilitate the annual Debutante program. They also plan and orchestrate the annual Charity Golf Tournament each spring, benefitting the Tampa Firefighters Camp Hopetake for previously burned children.

The Arms of Venus wear Renaissance-style costumes for parades, maintaining the Krewe colors of purple and gold, but are more individual in their appearance. While under the mantle of the Krewe of Venus and reporting directly to it, they have their own Captain and committees to organize their functions.

For more information on the Arms of Venus, Krewe history, and current and past Kings and Queens, visit our Kings and Queens and Krewe Information pages.

The Krewe of Venus is a social organization established to be part of the Tampa Bay area Krewe festivities. The Krewe participates in Gasparilla and other parades and events throughout the year. In addition to a myriad of informal and themed socials, dinners, and parties, we are distinguished from other area Krewes by our Mardi Gras style pageantry and multiple formal events.
